A memorial
with the list of all the Montana residents who were awarded the Purple Heart
medal in past wars has been erected on the Courthouse Lawn in Billings, MT.
The names represent those wounded in combat action from the Indian Wars up
to the Vietnam War. Names of current recipients of the Iraq and Afghanistan
Wars will also be added in due course. The display started with twelve
panels engraved with recipient's names and is currently at fourteen and
one-half panels with engraved names.
UPDATE: I recently completed
scanning, OCR'ing, & alphabetizing the names on the panels. Check out the
links for the lists at the top and bottom of this page. Each page is 1.5 meg
so they may take a while to load the first time if you have a slower
connection.
NOTE: A
much better list of those honored on the tablets used to be published on the
website of The Billings Gazette. It listed recipients in alphabetical
order and in which campaign they were involved with when they were wounded.
For some reason, the web page was removed. If you click on the panels below, make
sure that your browser is viewing the photo at it's full size.
This is very much a work in
progress, so please bear with me as I try to make it better. Realize that
the OCR process and my proofreading skills aren't perfect. If you see a
mistake, please email by clicking the link underlined so I can fix it
